Ameesha Patel Shocked by Fans’ ‘Letters Written in Blood’
Ameesha Patel Reflects on Scary Fan Encounters After ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’ Success
As Bollywood classic Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai celebrated its 25th anniversary, actress Ameesha Patel reminisced about the overwhelming fame and bizarre fan encounters that followed its release. The film, which marked a groundbreaking debut for both Patel and co-star Hrithik Roshan, catapulted them to overnight stardom.
Patel revealed how fan admiration took a strange turn, with some taking her and Roshan’s photos to temples and churches to perform symbolic marriage rituals. “There were so many fans marrying our pictures,” she shared. “I received letters with photos of me garlanded, wearing sindoor, and captions like, ‘You belong to me.’”
She added that some fans went to extreme lengths, even sending hate mail about her work with other actors. “They would write, ‘How can you work with Bobby (Deol) or Sunny (Deol)? You belong to me, Sonia.’”
Patel also recalled receiving handwritten letters, some written in blood. “It was flattering but equally terrifying. Fans would track down my residential address and camp outside for hours, hoping for a glimpse of me. Security guards often had to intervene and tell them it wasn’t my home,” she explained.
The actress noted how times have changed, emphasizing the lack of social media or entourages back then, which made these encounters even more intense.
Directed by Rakesh Roshan, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai became a massive hit upon its release in January 2000, earning a record-breaking 92 awards and cementing its place in Bollywood history.
