‘Squid Game’ Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk Discusses Expanding the Franchise with Spinoffs

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind Netflix’s global sensation Squid Game, has shared his thoughts on the show’s future beyond its highly anticipated third season. Speaking with a U.S. media outlet, the filmmaker reflected on his creative journey and revealed plans for potential spinoffs after Squid Game wraps up its main storyline.

Season 2, which premiered last month, continued Seong Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) gripping journey as he seeks to dismantle the deadly game from within. While the conclusion of Season 2 left fans on edge, Hwang confirmed that Season 3, slated for release in 2025, will serve as the series’ finale, bringing closure to Gi-hun’s arc.

“Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story,” Hwang explained. “That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun.”

However, Hwang expressed interest in exploring the Squid Game universe through spinoffs. “If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc,” he revealed. “For example, the masked guards—how did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.”

Fans of Squid Game can expect an exhilarating conclusion to the main storyline. “With each episode, it’s going to get better,” Hwang previously teased. “The story will be more intense, more expanded, and definitely more entertaining. So just be sure to watch it until the very end!”

As the series finale approaches, the prospect of spinoffs offers hope for fans eager to dive deeper into the enigmatic world of Squid Game.
