‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Becomes First Netflix Series to Dominate Charts Worldwide
‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Breaks Records as First Netflix Series to Top Charts Globally
The second season of Netflix’s blockbuster show Squid Game has set a groundbreaking record just a week after its debut. Premiering on December 26, Squid Game Season 2 became the first series to claim the No. 1 spot in all 93 countries where Netflix operates, according to a report by Forbes.
Following its remarkable start, the new season now aims to surpass the first season as Netflix’s most-watched series of all time.
The journey of Squid Game began in 2009 when creator Hwang Dong-hyuk conceptualized the story. However, it took Netflix a decade to greenlight the production, seeking to expand its portfolio of international programming.
When the nine-episode first season launched on Netflix in 2021, it quickly became a global phenomenon, garnering over two billion viewing hours and becoming the platform’s most-watched non-English series. With a collective 265 million total views, Squid Game cemented its place in streaming history.
As the second season continues to dominate, plans for a third — and possibly final — season are already underway.
Earlier this month, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, opened up about the intense demands of working on the hit show. The filmmaker admitted feeling “exhausted and sick” after the extensive process of creating and promoting the series.
“I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something,” Hwang shared. “So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix.”
Despite the pressures, the legacy of Squid Game continues to grow, capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide and setting new benchmarks for streaming content.
